Nottinghamshire’s Steve Birks has scooped an accolade at the ECB Groundsman of the Year Award.
The Head Groundsman at Trent Bridge won the award for one-day pitches for the second time six years, with Sussex’s Lee Fortis runner up.
Birks’ pitches in 2016 led to record-breaking matches in the Royal London One-Day Cup, where the Outlaws scored back-to-back scores in excess of 400, and in England’s ODI against Sri Lanka, where the hosts amassed the highest score in international 50 over cricket.
“Steve Birks has been a very consistent performer in both four-day and one-day categories,” said Chris Wood, the ECB’s Pitches Consultant
“More generally, this is an opportunity to thank and congratulate all our groundstaff for their work over the last 12 months. There were major challenges from the weather last winter, and from the change in regulations around the toss in the Specsavers County Championship.
“They responded magnificently, as they always do. It’s good to have this chance to recognise them.”
