The home-grown paceman, who is a product of Welbeck Cricket Club and the county’s age-group & Academy setup, starred with seven wickets at 19.86 in his debut One-Day International series in Bangladesh.

“It’s pride that someone from Notts, a home-grown player who has been with us a long time and come through the system, has reached those levels of success,” said the club captain.

“It’s early days for him yet and we want him to become a firm fixture in that side, but we’re very proud of him.

“It must be very pleasing for the guys in age-group cricket and the Academy right through to the first team.

“We’re seeing a path where young Nottinghamshire players can make it to the top.”

Read emphasised how importance Ball, 25, has become to Nottinghamshire’s bowling line-up, experience he is carrying into the international arena.

“He’s always been a very good athlete, but during the last two seasons he’s gained a yard of pace and taken some massive strides,” added Read.

“He’s been a firm fixture in all formats of the Nottinghamshire setup and become our most important bowler for the last 12 months.

“He’s pretty experienced now, particularly in white ball cricket where, along with Harry Gurney, he is our go to seamer and the heartbeat of our attack.

“At times we didn’t like the fact that he was travelling around with England during the summer when he could have been playing with us, but ultimately it has allowed him to settle into that team.”
