Steven Mullaney: My Week In Oz

Featured News | 10th February 2010

Notts all-rounder Steven Mullaney continues his diary from down under.

Monday 25th January - Back to business after a relaxing sunday and down to the centre at 9.30am with Scott and Chris. First we were straight into the nets for an hour and a half working on specific skills before having a break for lunch. Then after a bit of work in the shop whilst Chris was coaching we were upstairs in the gym for a session. Left the centre and returned home to watch a film and just chilled out for the night.

Tuesday 26th January - Today was Australia day. Which is a public holiday so me and a few mates were invited to a BBQ for the afternoon. In the evening me and Scott went down to McKinnon to water the wicket before heading back to his house to have tea and watch Andy Murray beat Rafael Nadal in the quarter final of the Australian Open. Also watched a bit of the Aussies beating Pakistan in the ODI series. I also found out on Australia day that they have a public holiday for the Queens birthday. I couldn’t believe that they get a day off and she lives in our country and we don’t get a day off....Terrible!!!

Wednesday 27th January - Up and out to the centre again at 10am. Had a net with Scott for a couple of hours where I batted on the bowling machine and then bowled at Scott. We then did some fielding drills to finish off before we had lunch. After lunch I did some work in the shop before heading up to the gym for the second session of the week. Then it was home at around 4pm for a shower before having tea with my adopted Australian family and a quiet night in with them.

Thursday 28th January - Down to the centre for an early gym session with Chris and Scott before a couple of hours on the bowling machine with a bit of lunch in between. Then off to McKinnon for training for two and a half hours before returning home for tea.

Friday 29th January - A light gym session in the morning, again with Scott and a good hit on the bowling machine with Paul Franks again. Returned home at around 4pm for a shower and get ready. Then off to pick Scott Chris and a few other mates up to go to the cinema to watch the new film Invictus. For the first 45 minutes I thought it was the worst film I had ever seen but the last hour and a half were brilliant and was well worth going to see.

Saturday 30th January - Game day. Down to the club at 11.30am for our pre-match warm-up before we started our run chase from the week before. Unfortunately we didn’t make the runs but alot of positives to build on for our next, and my last game. I made 21 and (it may sound like i am being a bit of a sulker or have something against the umpires) suffered another terrible LBW decision. I guess that’s why its a great game and hopefully some luck is on its way.

Sunday 31st January - After a nice lie in it was the Australian Open Tennis Final between Andy Murray and Roger Federer. Me and a few mate got ground pass tickets. So we went down to the Rod Laver Areana and watched it on the big screen. As I’m sure you know Federer won but it was a great day out and we had a few beverages and a lot of laughs.
