David Hussey, the former Australia international and Nottinghamshire batsman, will captain the Melbourne Stars in the 2015/16 Big Bash League.

The 38-year-old big-hitter, who announced his retirement from the first-class game back in April, replaces Michael Clarke in the leadership position after the outgoing baggy green skipper opted for an indefinite break from all forms of the game.

James Faulkner, the Australia all-rounder who has spent the current county season with Lancashire, will serve as Hussey’s vice-captain, and the former Outlaw believes part of his role is to nurture his 25-year-old junior to takeover the reigns in the future.

“It’s an interesting decision by the Melbourne Stars,” said Hussey.

“James Faulkner’s going to be the vice-captain and he’s going to be a great person to bounce ideas off. I’ve also learnt from two great captains before me in Shane Warne and Cameron White.

“In terms of me being captain, it’s a tough one. I’m always for never standing in the way of a younger player coming through.

“James Faulkner, hopefully we can work together and maybe he’s going to be a future captain of the Melbourne Stars, maybe next year or the year after.

“I’m really focused on helping the Melbourne Stars,” continued Hussey, who made 81 first-class appearances for Nottinghamshire during multiple spells between 2004 and 2013.

“I want to win some silverware,” he said. “It is frustrating. We’ve been semi-finalists every year since the inception of the competition.”

With Steven Fleming, also a successful former overseas player at Trent Bridge, as coach, Ben Hilfenhaus a recent new addition to the bowling line-up and Kevin Pietersen contracted as an overseas player, Hussey is not the only player with Nottinghamshire connections in the Melbourne camp.

They will not, however, be joined by Shane Warne who this week poured scorn on suggestions he was about to come out of retirement.

Trent Bridge will host England's One-Day Internationals against Sri Lanka and Pakistan in 2016. Sign up here to be the first to hear about fixture and ticketing information for these two matches.
