September 16 2010 will go down in the Nottinghamshire history books as a day the team defied the odds to win their second County Championship in six years.

With the majority of the first three days of their crucial game at Lancashire washed out, Notts faced an uphill task as they were unable to reach a deal with the hosts to set up a game on the final day.

They were left with a daunting equation; secure six bonus points on the final day by taking their score from 85-2 to 400 and taking three wickets, a task they accomplished in style.

Adam Voges (126) and Samit Patel (96) provided the backbone of the Notts effort, adding 150 in 28 overs for the fifth wicket.

However, nervous times ensued as the visitors fell to 390-9, still requiring ten runs for the maximum batting points.

Step up Ryan Sidebottom and Darren Pattinson, the unlikely duo adding the runs in 5.1 nerve-wracking overs setting up the Notts declaration on 400-9.

"The boys have worked extremely hard all year." Centurion Voges’ reaction

With maximum batting points secured, the bowling unit had 15 overs to take the three wickets needed for Championship victory; they needed just 4.4.

Sidebottom had Karl Brown caught by Alex Hales at first slip before Andre Adams produced an unplayable delivery to have Mark Chilton caught behind.

Adams, the stand out bowler during the 2010 season with 68 wickets, ensured his final victim of the season was the most memorable, Shivnarine Chanderpaul caught by Patel in the slips to spark wild celebrations.

Nottinghamshire Director of Cricket Mick Newell, who led the side to their second Championship victory in his ninth season in charge, said on the day: “To win it like that makes me very proud and people will look at it as an honest and fair way to win.

"We had to work hard to get there. Lancashire gave full commitment and fielded like a Twenty20 game.

"There's been a number of times when I couldn't see us winning it and we've been criticised in the last couple of weeks for bottling it, so to come up with a performance like that, I'm very very pleased."

David Hussey was amongst the first to congratulate the Notts dressing room having watched live coverage from South Africa where he is preparing for the Champions League.

"I watched the game all afternoon and I was certainly very nervous when we were nine down needing 400 runs but the boys pulled through and I'm delighted for them," said Hussey.

"Chris Read has had a fantastic season and the form of Andre Adams kept them in the hunt throughout.

"I'm so happy that they have won the title because all of the boys and the coaching staff thoroughly deserve it."

"Unbelievable feeling to be a County Championship winner." Steven Mullaney reaction
