This weekend will see a group of young people from Radcliffe-on-Trent plant a memorial commemorating 100 years since the outset of the First World War on the road approaching the village.

The project will take place by members of Positive Futures in Rushcliffe, the headline scheme of the Trent Bridge Community Trust, in partnership with Radcliffe-on-Trent Parish Council.

Five Radcliffe residents aged between 10 and 14 will undertake the ‘Community Pride’, which will be attended by veterans ahead of their scheduled march between Newark and Nottingham this Sunday.

Aimed towards continuing Positive Futures’ aim to re-engage young people with their local community, co-ordinator Mark Clifford is hoping that the activity will help his young people appreciate their local history.

“This an excellent opportunity for our young people to be given a history lesson,” he said.

“I think sometimes people lose sight of what people have sacrificed for us. It’s not just a life lesson though; it’s a great advert for what we do in the community.

“It’s there to honour people from the local area. It’s so much more than a planting. It offers meaning for the young people. We want to link it back to their families and really make them realise what local people gave up.

“We’d like this project to help bring everyone in that community closer together. To have some of the marching veterans join us on Sunday would be a huge honour, and would be excellent in helping to bring local communities closer together.”

The planting will take place on Friday 8 August, between 12pm and 2pm, with a veteran present to mark the occasion.
