England are embarking on their tour of the West Indies as firm favourites, but Nottinghamshire's Stuart Broad is refusing to be coaxed into taking their opponents lightly.

Chris Gayle is expected to miss the three Test series with a back injury for what many believe to be a beleaguered home side who have slipped to 8th in the ICC World Rankings.

But with the harrowing experience of a series defeat in the Caribbean six years ago still haunting him, and Nottinghamshire teammates telling him all about the unresponsive pitches in that part of the world following their recent tour of Barbados, the 28-year-old is erring on the side of caution.

"My only Test tour there in 2009 we lost 1-0," he said. "We got bowled out famously for 51 and Jerome Taylor [who took 5-11 in that match] is going to be in the squad again.

"It's going to be a tough place to go. You hear rumours of us being expected to win and all that sort of thing, but they aren't missing that many Test players.

"Chris Gayle has obviously got a bit of a back issue but the likes of Pollard and Russell who go to the IPL aren't Test cricketers.

"They'll have a strong squad out and they'll be hungry to get after us I'm sure.

"We need to make sure we prepare really well in the first ten days we're there because, once we get into the cricket, it's non-stop."

Following a long stint of One-Day International cricket - and of course a disappointing World Cup - the white clothing, umbrella fields, red balls and glimpses of Alistair Cook feel like something of a distant memory.

Broad, however, is keen to to remember that England won their most recent Investec Test Series 3-1 against India and he's excited about becoming reacquainted with the red ball format.

"I love Test Match cricket so I'm looking forward to the Caribbean," he said.

"You only have to speak to the Notts guys about how the wickets play over there; they've all come back thinking they're pretty flat, so we'll have to use our skill and nous, looking for reverse-swing and maybe fielders in-front of the wicket.

"We finished the summer extremely well. It's important we don't get caught up in merging ODI cricket and Test cricket together because they are two very different formats.

"It would be wrong to go to the Caribbean on a negative because we beat India 3-1 at home, we built some great momentum towards the end of last summer and we should go the Caribbean confident with what we're doing in the Test Match team.

"Cooky [Alistair Cook] comes back in, he'll be desperate for runs and, if I was a betting man, I'd put money on him getting runs in the Caribbean because we know he's probably our best batsman ever."
