Worcestershire have strengthened their side on the back of LV= County Championship promotion with the solitary signing of Alex Gidman from Gloucestershire.

The 33-year-old made 187 first-class appearances in 13 seasons for his former county Gloucestershire, a side he captained from 2009 to 2012.

Gidman, a former England Lions international and scorer of 24 career first-class centuries, has been earmarked by coach Steve Rhodes as a right-hand man on the field to New Road skipper Daryl Mitchell.

An all-rounder that seems to favour the batting side of the game, Gidman is likely to come up against his brother, Will, when the Pears visit Trent Bridge starting on Monday 29 June.

Overseas off-spinner Saeed Ajmal may or may not have rejoined the ranks by that date, with the Pakistan off-spinner's availability very much dependent on his international commitments.

The whole cricketing world will be watching the 37-year-old mystery twirler as he returns to cricket with a remodelled bowling action. How their Faisalabad born star fares during this comeback could be critical to the Pears' chances of a successful campaign.

Ajmal played nine matches for Worcestershire during their 2014 promotion winning summer, taking 63 wickets at an average of 16.46 as second division batsmen completely failed to come to terms with the man that proved to be England's nemesis during the 2012 Test series in Abu Dhabi.

How players in the top division approach the challenge of playing the mystery spinner will be an intriguing strand to the LV= County Championship story, but Ajmal did not bowl Worcestershire to promotion alone. The five time county champions also boast an underrated trio of seamers in Charlie Morris, Joe Leach and Jack Shantry.

Shantry, an unorthodox left-armer who learned his trade in minor counties cricket with Shropshire, enjoyed remarkable success in 2014 taking 56 first-class wickets at an average below 24. He began the 2015 campaign by recording match figures of 10-26 against Oxford MCCU.

With the bat, the experience of Gidman and captan Daryl Mitchell will harness an otherwise youthful, talented and largely homegrown batting order featuring the likes of Stoke-on-Trent born Richard Oliver, Oxford University graduate Tom Fell, Namibian born Holland international Alexei Kervezee and the 20-year-old Academy graduate nicknamed "pepsi" Tom Kohler-Cadmore.

Worcestershire born and bred gloveman Ben Cox, aged 23, became a mainstay of the side behind the stumps in 2014 and is likely to retain that position.
