Centuries from Jake Libby, Will Root and captain Steven Mullaney guided the Nottinghamshire seconds to a remarkable eight-wicket victory over Derbyshire at the 3aaa County Ground, scoring 416 runs in just 84 overs on the final day.

Resuming on their overnight 33-1, Nottinghamshire needed an unlikely 413 more to win with the chance of a draw seeming the more likely.

Libby and Root started cautiously but had added a useful 100 by the time the first session had finished the former going to his watchful half-century from 136 balls.

The right hander had moved to 57* by the time the interval came around, Root unbeaten at the other end on 49 as Notts moved to 133-1.

Root followed his partner to fifty just after the break and with the Derbyshire bowlers tiring they put their foot down in the afternoon session.

Libby was first to his century, it coming off 194 balls with the second fifty coming off just 58 balls before Root followed him there off 167 balls.

However, their outstanding second-wicket partnership ended on 242 as Libby was caught at slip by Jonathan Clare off David Wainwright for 123.

Seconds captain Mullaney joined Root and took the side to 273-2 at tea, Root not out on 111* and Mullaney on eight, the visitors needing a further 173 to win from the remaining 34 overs.

The final session of the day was all about Mullaney, the right hander scoring his runs quickly and with ease as he guided his side to a remarkable victory.

He went to his fifty from 56 balls before completing his century just 26 balls later, dominating the partnership he had with Root.

Root, who had anchored the chase from when he went to the crease on the second evening, did have time to reach his 150 though, coming off 229 balls.

The winning runs aptly came from the bat of Mullaney, a four taking the total to 449-2 and giving the seconds an eight-wicket that seemed unlikely at the start of the day.

Root (166*) and Mullaney (119*) ended the match with an unbeaten partnership of 195,  the three centurions making the Derbyshire bowlers toil all day for little reward under the sweltering sun.
