With Trevor Bayliss taking over as England Head Coach ahead of the Ashes, and with players up and down the country hoping to take advantage of a clean slate by impressing for their counties, Riki Wessels and Michael Lumb are already one step ahead of the game.

The Nottinghamshire duo have already worked alongside the 52-year-old in the Big Bash League with the Sydney Sixers and both expect the new appointment to bring an aura of tranquillity to the national setup.

"He's one of the most chilled coaches I've ever played under, so it will be quite different for a lot of players," Wessels said.

"During the last 12 months they've been under a lot of pressure, so they might enjoy the relaxation he brings to a team.

"There is enough pressure on the guys as it is playing Test cricket, especially in an Ashes series, so if the coach is calm and collected that will reflect on the players.

"Trevor knows what he needs to do and he gets the job done. He's got quite a young squad that he can mould quite nicely now.

"He's been at the IPL for the last few years and the Big Bash will have spiced his coaching up too.

"He's coming in at a good time because the side is young and fresh. It was good to see Alastair Cook back in the runs against New Zealand as well, so he might be taking over at just the right time.

"There's a bit of pressure on him as a coach, especially coming from Australia to lead the England side in an Ashes series. But he's certainly got inside knowledge on the opposition and he's got a nice squad to build with for the next few years, starting by hopefully winning the Ashes."

Lumb, who is currently on the sidelines undergoing rehabilitation from an arm injury, played down the prospect of the Bayliss appointment furthering his own England chances, but backed the former Sri Lanka and Kolkata Knight Riders boss to oversee a regime in which talent will flourish.

"I'll wait and see," Lumb said. "I've got to get back on the field first, but it's handy that he's seen me play before. I'll get back playing first then see how we go.

"Trevor is a great man whose had a lot of success, particularly in white ball cricket. He is someone who can take England forward.

"As a coach he brings calmness to the group and he'll help the England players express themselves and play with no fear, almost like the way Australia play now, always trying to win the game and playing positive cricket.

"He'll bring a definite calmness to any group and in international cricket that will be good.

"All good coaches have a knack of bringing out the best in people so he will be brilliant for players like Ben Stokes because he stays behind the scenes and leaves it up to the players to go out, express themselves and play their natural games. For the youngsters in the England side, he will be brilliant.

"There has been a bit of change but the win this weekend was great for English cricket and now, with the Ashes coming up, Trevor Bayliss will bring his fresh approach.

"He knows a lot of the players, there are a lot of New South Wales players in that Ashes squad, so he'll arrive having done a bit of homework on them, which all helps."
