Nottinghamshire succumbed to their second defeat of the LV= County Championship season when they were beaten by 133 runs against Somerset at Trent Bridge.

In an extraordinary third day’s play a total of 22 wickets fell, with the home side eventually being bowled out for 114 in pursuit of a victory target of 248.

Earlier Notts had reached 226 in their first innings, thanks largely to Samit Patel, who made 56. Somerset were then skittled out for only 161 with Vernon Philander taking three for 47.

The fourth innings run chase began badly and Somerset were in a position to ask for the extra half an hour, in which they secured their first Championship win on the ground since 2007.

Craig Overton opened proceedings, bowling what turned out to be an eventful first over of the day. Jake Ball punched the second ball of the day through the off side for four and then played a similar shot to bring him three more runs.

That took Notts beyond the 200 mark needed for a first batting point and the over then finished with another boundary, as Samit Patel clipped his first ball of the day for four.

Ball didn’t last much longer, steering the eighth delivery of the day to point, to give Jim Allenby his second wicket of the innings.

A period of cat and mouse followed, in which Somerset protected their boundaries to try and halt Patel’s run-scoring potential, whilst hoping to bowl as many deliveries as possible at last man Harry Gurney.

Patel won the battle – for a while. He hit Allenby over extra cover for 6 and moved to his second Championship 50 of the season from 107 balls, with 5 fours and that maximum.

On 56 he hit Craig Overton firmly down the ground and into the waiting hands of James Hildreth to bring the innings to a close.

Resuming with an overall first innings lead of 86 Somerset were soon in trouble.

Vernon Philander bowled Marcus Trescothick for nought, for the second time in the match, with just the fifth ball of the innings.

Johannes Myburgh then followed, also without scoring, as he steered the South African bowler to Steven Mullaney at third slip.

After a brief stoppage for rain Luke Wood picked up two lbw appeals to rock the Cider Men further. Tom Abell went for 11 and Tom Cooper completed a disappointing match by falling for just 2.

Mullaney was thrown the ball straight after lunch and obliged with the fifth wicket, having James Hildreth given out lbw for 23.

Jake Ball had gone without a wicket in the first innings but soon addressed that by beginning with a wicket maiden after entering the attack in the 21st over.

He bowled Allenby for 14 and then had Peter Trego given out lbw for 24 – although umpire Cook made the batsman wait an indeterminable age before raising the finger.

Alex Barrow scored 25 but gave Notts another lifeline by rashly hoisting Harry Gurney to Mullaney at midwicket.

Philander quickly saw off Overton and Groenewald fell to Mullaney as the innings folded dramatically.

When Notts batted for a second time they quickly ran into trouble, with six of the top seven batsmen in the order falling for single figure scores. Only Riki Wessels, who made 30, was able to withstand the onslaught but he then became the third player to edge to Trescothick at second slip.

Eight wickets were down when the extra half an hour was asked for and the visitors were soon celebrating after removing Wood and Gurney, leaving Philander unbeaten on 35.
