Mick Newell says Nottinghamshire will fight to secure five crucial points on the final day of the Specsavers County Championship match against Hampshire.

The home side are 42-2 in the final innings of the match heading into day four at Trent Bridge, requiring a notional further 425 runs for victory.

Newell says his charges will play positively, but will focus on saving the game.

“We need the five points we’d get for securing a draw, so we need to show some application tomorrow,” he said

“Somebody has got to bat a lot of balls and that is going to be crucial.

“We felt that they would bat for a long time and they did, so they’ve given us less time to bat. We hoped to survive that session one wicket down but to lose two is disappointing.

“The ball is turning a little bit, but on the whole it’s a good batting surface and we know the target in terms of how long we need to bat.

“If you get a bad ball, you’re always looking to hit it for four, but we need to be disciplined and make sure we bat these overs, because those five points could be crucial.”
