Jake Ball made his first impression on the Mumbai Test with the bat as England amassed a first innings total of 400.

The Nottinghamshire fast bowler was in impressive touch, crunching four fours off the Indian spinners en-route to his highest Test score.

The Welbeck Wizard shared in a crucial ninth wicket partnership of 54 with Jos Buttler, who scored 76 batting at number seven in the England order.

India’s spinners Ravi Ashwin (6-112) and Ravi Jadeja (4-109) took all ten England wickets to fall.

Ball then bowled four tidy overs for four runs as India closed on 146-1 with Murali Vijay unbeaten on 70.

With England starting the day on 285-5, Ben Stokes was first to go, caught by Virat Kohli at slip and completing Ashwin’s 23rd career five-wicket haul.

Jadeja collected the next two wickets, having Chris Woakes (11) caught behind and bowling Adil Rashid for four as the Yorkshire leg-spinner wrongly shouldered arms.

Ball received a let-off before scoring but went on to blunt the Indian attack for over an hour, including a period against the second new ball.

He eventually fell edging a sharply spinning delivery from Ashwin behind, before Buttler was the last man to go, bowled by Jadeja attempting a leg-side heave.

The tourists claimed the wicket of Lokesh Rahul, bowled through the gate by Moeen Ali for 24 shortly before tea.

It was, however, to be England’s last success of the day with the ensuing partnership between Vijay and Pujara their seventh century stand in Tests.
