Former England batsman David Steele will be the guest speaker for the first Nottingham Cricket Lovers’ Society meeting of 2017, taking place on Thursday 12 January.

Steele enjoyed a prolific career with the bat, and ball, on the county circuit, scoring over 22,000 runs and taking in excess of 600 wickets in his 500 first-class matches.

The right-hander was something of a surprise selection when, in 197,5 he was called up from his county duties for the Ashes series to face the might of Dennis Lillee and Jeff Thomson in their prime.

Steele’s courageous batting against such a formidable attack earned him great praise and respect as he went on to score four half centuries in the Test series which led to him being named as the BBC Sports Personality of the Year at the end of the season.

He went on in the following season to face the equally menacing West Indian pace attack of Sir Andy Roberts, Michael Holding, Wayne Daniel and Vanburn Holder and scored a century against them at Trent Bridge in his fourth Test.

Steele will be speaking in the Long Room at Trent Bridge from 7:30pm.
