Sam Wood once again shined with the bat but his fifty from the top of the order wasn’t enough to guide his side to victory against Derbyshire.

After the second day of the Championship fixture was washed out due to rain, and most of the final morning, both sides forfeited an innings to leave Nottinghamshire a target of 306 to win in 63 overs.

Wood led the charge from the top of the order, negotiating the first session to end on 46* at lunch, alongside Brendan Taylor on three.

Derbyshire would have been pleased with their morning work though, Will Root (7) and Will Gidman (18) falling to the bowling of Ben Cotton and Alex Hughes respectively.

Wood moved to 62 in the afternoon, another top knock from the left-hander in 2016, before he became Cotton’s second victim, caught by Tom Knight.

Taylor continued on Wood’s good work but fell on 32, caught at deep long on off Matt Critchley and from there Derbyshire ripped through the hosts’ middle order.

Critchley (3-53) had Dominic Brown (4) and Luke Wood (5) dismissed in quick succession before another Cotton (5-31) left Notts on 168-9.

Matt Carter battled valiantly to keep Derbyshire at bay, but he was eventually caught and bowled by Knight for 26, the visitors completing a 110-run victory.
