Tomorrow’s clash between Notts Outlaws and the Yorkshire Vikings could see 18 full internationals on display, including Australia’s James Pattinson making his List A debut for the home side.

Alex Hales, Stuart Broad and Jake Ball are all in contention to feature for the Outlaws, whilst the Vikings squad includes Jonny Bairstow, Adil Rashid, David Willey, Liam Plunkett – and Billy Root’s elder brother, England Test captain Joe.

Understandably, Billy would love to be involved against his brother.

“We’ll just have to go one step at a time and see what happens; see who is picked to play - but it would be nice to play against him and get him out.”

Billy recalled that the brothers have played against each other before but those meetings came in the distant past.

“I’ve played against him a few years ago in the Yorkshire Premier League, when I played for Sheffield Collegiate against the Yorkshire Academy. I’ll give you one guess who came out on top!”

A glance at the record books shows that the Root siblings met in matches in 2008 and 2009, with Joe’s Academy side winning on both occasions, although Billy outscored his elder sibling in the first meeting.

Asked if there’s been any contact ahead of the potential clash, Billy confirmed it was brief. “He just sent me a message to say “Good Luck – All the best!”

Billy made his List A debut against Worcestershire on Thursday and scored 46; an important moment for the 24-year-old despite the duckworth/lewis defeat.

“It was so disappointing not to get over the line,” he said. “The lads gave it a pretty good crack but I thought we had the worst of the conditions.

“It was nice to get a game and a pretty good all-round experience.”

The debutant’s 46 came off only 42 balls as he shared in a stand of 84 in 12.4 overs with centurion Michael Lumb.

“I was just focused on the situation,” he said. “I knew what needed to be done and went out to do it.

Nottinghamshire Head Coach Peter Moores is hoping for a sizeable attendance to boost his side as they aim to bounce back from the opening game defeat at New Road.

“A big crowd for the first game would make a real difference to the players. We’re hoping for a great atmosphere,” he said.

“There will be so many internationals involved and Trent Bridge is a fantastic ground on which to play and watch.

“It’s a big game with all the top names on show. It would be great if people come out and support us.

“Someone is going to win a trophy halfway through the season. That’s a great carrot for everyone.

“The thought of playing a 50 over final at Lord’s and winning is great for any player. It’s right up there, so we’re up for this competition.”
