Peter Moores says bowling was a thankless task on a benign Barbados belter, but says he was particularly impressed by a tireless performance from Luke Fletcher.

Moores believes figures of 0-50 ceased to do justice to the Bulwell Bomber’s performance as Hampshire posted 295-3 under the baking sun at the Desmond Haynes Oval.

Steven Mullaey, Michael Lumb, Alex Hales and Samit Patel also pleased the Head Coach by spending qulity time at the crease.

Notts made 279 for five and 121 for three, with Hampshire posting 295 for three.

Afterwards, Moores gave his verdict on the fixture, which saw his batsmen tested by an attack featuring Kyle Abbott (South Africa) and Fidel Edwards (West Indies), with Notts unable to call upon any of their all international quartet of James Pattinson, Jake Ball, Stuart Broad and Harry Gurney.

“It’s been a really good exercise with both the bowlers and the batters getting through some good work,” he said.

“It’s a good pitch although there’s not much in for the bowlers. We’ve jiggled the side around a bit and had a really competitive game.

“At the end, you had Kyle Abbott and Fidel Edwards running in at Alex Hales, Chris Read and Samit Patel.

“That bodes very well for the season.”

On day one, Mullaney retired on 76, while Lumb made 77 and Hales 49 before Hales. Patel (59), Hales (45 not out) and Fletcher were the pick of the second day.

“Mull and Lumby played well yesterday, Samit and Alex Hales played really well on day two,” he said.

“Alex played well both days. It’s good for him having had a whole winter of white ball cricket.

“The bowlers all got a couple of spells in. Luke Fletcher in particular ran in well and is hitting his straps.”

“A lot of it comes down to the opposition. We had some great opposition. They had some Test match bowlers.

“Our bowlers got some mileage in their legs two. It’s very different to bowling in the nets.

“It’s what you do to try and build yourself up for the season.”
