A foot injury is likely to keep Steven Mullaney out of the first few matches of the Specsavers County Championship season.

The opening batsman made 89 on the first day of the match against Cambridge MCCU at Fenner’s but was then sent for a scan on his left foot.

First team physiotherapist James Pipe confirmed that the 30-year-old opener would miss the opening rounds of the new season.

“Steven has got an acute reaction to the third metatarsal on his left foot,” he said.

“It’s a slightly uncommon injury but we’ve picked it up very quickly, so it hasn’t had time to develop into something more serious, so we can get him back as soon as we can.

“These things tend to build up over a period of time. He had a slight irritation in the area in Barbados. That settled down quickly but it has flared up again after the first day of the match against Cambridge MCCU.

“He’s had a scan during this game. We’re going to keep the foot in a protective boot for a couple of weeks and treat it symptomatically to get him back playing as quickly as we possible.”
