Rain prevented any play on the opening day of Nottinghamshire’s Specsavers County Championship season in their match against Lancashire at Emirates Old Trafford.

With players and spectators, alike, eagerly looking forward to the start of the new campaign, all were left feeling hugely frustrated as the elements took their toll.

Wet weather overnight, plus steady morning drizzle, prompted umpires Neil Mallender and Graham Lloyd to make an early announcement that there would be no play before lunch.

Conditions remained wet underfoot and although the groundstaff began mopping up in early afternoon the ground remained too wet for any play and the day’s proceedings were officially called off at 2.35pm.

It is the first day since 1999 that the opening day of the season at Old Trafford has been washed out by rain.

If conditions allow, play will start at 11am tomorrow, with 104 overs to be bowled in the day in a bid to catch up one some of those lost.
