Nottinghamshire's Second Eleven battled back in testing circumstances to finish 105/5 at Lady Bay on day two of the Second XI Championship opener against Lancashire.

Notts lost five early wickets in the evening session to leave themselves perilously positioned at 34/5, responding to Lancashire’s 490/7 declared, before some stout resistance from Dane Schadendorf (31*) and Matt Carter (34*) stemmed the flow.

The visitors got themselves into a strong position at 309/2 overnight on day one, but Joey Evison got the early breakthrough in the morning; that of George Bell in the ninth over, caught by Sol Budinger.

Wickets then came in pairs for the Green and Golds; two fell on the stroke of lunch to Tom Barber and James Hayes, both to catches, and two more to run outs in the afternoon session, Pettman the fielder to dismiss George Lavelle for a well-made 174, and wicketkeeper Schadendorf the architect for the dismissal of Jack Blatherwick.

Lancashire declared at tea after accumulating 56 for the eighth wicket, and it was Blatherwick who made the inroads into Notts’ top order in tandem with Liam Hurt.

The pair snared a handful of wickets inside 12 overs before the sixth wicket partnership worth 71 guided Nottinghamshire to the close of play.
