Monty Panesar has included Fateh Singh and Liam Patterson-White in an eight-strong list of spinners he believes England should be training their eyes on this summer.

Writing in the Telegraph, the left-armer, who claimed 167 scalps for his country, chose an octet of young twirlers who he felt possessed the ability to bowl match-winning spells for the national side.

Amongst them was Panesar’s fellow southpaw Patterson-White, who has taken 46 First-Class wickets in 20 outings.

“He is a useful bowler who played a huge role for Nottinghamshire last year, but is also handy with the bat, having scored his maiden hundred against Somerset,” he wrote.

“He is probably similar in style and action to Jack Leach, and given there is a sense in the game that Leach is not a match-winning spinner, England may look at Patterson-White this summer.”

Panesar also singled out orthodox spinner Singh for praise as the 17-year-old embarks on his first full season as a professional, having played a part in England’s run to the final of the U19 World Cup over the winter.

“My encounter with him was at Trent Bridge and, watching him bowl, I thought he had a lovely, rhythmical action,” he recalled.

“He has done well for England Under-19s, but playing for the first team would be a major step up.

“It is definitely worth monitoring his progress over the summer, and he could be a surprise choice for the England Lions if he can make the most of any opportunities in white-ball cricket.”

Panesar also highlighted Callum Parkinson, Matt Critchley, Amar Virdi, Dan Moriarty, Rehan Ahmed and Thilan Walallwita as prospects to watch in the coming months.
