Bilal Shafayat scored his second century of the season as Notts took strides towards Sussex’s first innings total at Hove.

Shafayat shared an opening partnership of 157 with Will Jefferson and put on 66 with Mark Wagh for the second wicket before he was bowled by Jason Lewry.

Notts started the day by reducing the hosts from 292-5 to 339 all out as Charlie Shreck took four wickets in 27 balls. Rob Ferley ended the innings when he had Lewry caught by Chris Read.

“Will and Bilal played very well and it’s important to achieve a big score when you have the chance to bat on a good pitch,” said Notts Director of Cricket Mick Newell.

“The wicket is flat and it’s not doing very much and we’re aiming to double our score and put pressure on Sussex.

“We made an excellent effort with the ball this morning and it was important that we followed that up with a good batting performance to regain the initiative.”

Mark Wagh (31) and Ashwell Prince (20) will resume for Notts who survived two dropped catches in the slips.

Jefferson was dropped on seven before going on to record a season-best score of 80 while Wagh was dropped on 16.
