A five-wicket haul from all-rounder Scott Elstone could not prevent Nottinghamshire Second XI from losing to Northamptonshire in their three-day friendly at Rugby School.

Fielding a number of trialists, it was senior bowler Darren Pattinson who made the early inroads into the Northants batting with two quick wickets after the hosts batted first.

A stand of 63 between Paul Harrison (52) and Mark Nelson (21) took the score to 91 before Elstone claimed the first of his five victims and wickets continued to fall regularly on a dry pitch, with only Nathan Hawkes (39) offering any resistance.

Young off-spinner Elstone went on to record figures of 5-55 as Northants were dismissed for 180, with Pattinson claiming 3-27.

Notts fared little better against the twin left-arm spin attack of Tom Brett and Graeme White. Akhil Patel held the innings together with 63 from 171 balls in three hours, but the visitors were only able to reach 148 all out.

Jason Brown took 3-54 in the Northants second innings before the hosts declared on 202-6, with Paul Harrison top scoring with an unbeaten 63.

Requiring 235 to win from 52 overs, Notts lost Patel, Sam Wood and Matt Wood before the score reached 40. Only trialist Akbar Ansari (47) showed any form as White took 6-47 to bowl Notts out for 117, losing by the same margin.
