Openers Matt Wood and Scott Newman failed to take advantage of idyllic batting conditions as Notts slipped to 48-4 after Hampshire cruised to a first innings declaration of 654-8.

Wood top edged a short ball to David Griffiths in the gulley for 10 whilst Newman was caught by Burrows off Dominic Cork for 25.

In between those dismissals, Imran Tahir, who wreaked havoc in the corresponding fixture last season, had Mark Wagh and Darren Pattinson lbw to preserve a lead of 606 runs.

“Scoreboard pressure has got to our batsmen and our top three will all be disappointed with the way they got out,” said Nottinghamshire Director of Cricket Mick Newell.

“If they see a ball to hit then they’re entitles to hit it but the right shots weren’t played.

“I thought that our body language was quite negative and we let our heads drop when we saw it was a flat wicket but now we need some big partnerships to enable us to bat for as long a period as possible.

“I want to see some guts and some physical and technical fight because any points that we get from this game will be very important.”

With a declaration in sight, Griffiths hit Samit Patel for two sixes and a four in the same over but Patel’s spin had been Nottinghamshire’s most effective weapon in two torrid days in the field as he finished with 4-199.

Pattinson (0-144) and Shreck (1-115) were also expensive but Mark Ealham retained control to finish without a wicket with just 42 runs conceded.

Hampshire didn’t dwell on news of Michael Carberry’s season-ending finger break with Michael Lumb compiling a fluid 219, his highest ever score in first class cricket.

Bilal Shafayat’s eight over spell ended Sean Ervine’s century stand as he drove the ball to Scott Newman having scored 104.

Shafayat will resume alongside Samit Patel with a mountain to climb.
