A single wicket for Samit Patel and two for Darren Pattinson completed a satisfactory day in the field although Notts will be keen to get back in the pavilion as early as possible on the final day.

“Having this fixture at this stage of the season is good for us and it’s important that we get what we need from it which is effective match practice rather than a win,” said Nottinghamshire Director of Cricket Mick Newell.

“We won’t enforce the follow-on and the plan is to mop up the tail and have another bat tomorrow.

“Luke Fletcher and Ryan Sidebottom were our most effective bowlers but it’s a flat wicket and not a particularly threatening Durham attack so if our batsmen get a start they should be going on to score fifties and hundreds.”
