Akhil Patel will open the batting alongside Neil Edwards when Nottinghamshire face Sussex in the LV= County Championship from Tuesday.

As expected, Stuart Broad and Graeme Swann come into the side with Sussex able to call on Matt Prior, Michael Yardy and Luke Wright.

“We’re pleased that Andre feels he can bowl again because he is our in-form bowler at the moment.” Mick Newell

Patel’s inclusion follows the news that Alex Hales faces a month on the sidelines as he recovers from a broken jaw.

“Akhil has had to be patient but he was told that if he scored consistently in the second eleven that his chance would come,” said Nottinghamshire Director of Cricket Mick Newell.

“He’s aware that this represents a big opportunity for him and he knows that he has our backing.”

Andre Adams passed a late fitness test to earn his selection after suffering a tricep strain in last week’s win over Yorkshire. His inclusion means that Paul Franks and Ben Phillips are rested with Darren Pattinson and Andy Carter sidelined through injury.

“Graeme and Stuart have a big part to play for us in the next two matches and their presence against Sussex’s England players will add another dimension to the match,” said Newell.

“We’re pleased that Andre feels he can bowl again because he is our in-form bowler at the moment.”
