Paul Franks will lead Nottinghamshire in the first match of their Barbados tour against Warwickshire. Naming a starting eleven without club captain Chris Read, director of cricket Mick Newell explained.

“We want to have a look at Riki Wessels as a ‘keeper and feel this is a good opportunity to do so.”

Also absent from the starting line-up against the Bears will be England Twenty20 players Alex Hales and Michael Lumb.

“Both have slight knocks, as has Luke Fletcher but all should be in contention for a place in the next couple of days.”

“Andy Carter only flew back from Australia a couple of days before we travelled out here, so we’re giving him a little longer to recover.”

Newell says the competition for places in the county championship side begins here.

“The likes of Neil Edwards, Karl Turner, Riki Wessels and Steven Mullaney will hopefully make the most of the opportunities on this tour. I now feel there is a healthy competition for places throughout the squad.”
