Two local lads were amongst the stand-out performers as Nottinghamshire pulled off their 114-run victory over Surrey, the first time that the visitors had tasted defeat at Trent Bridge since 1992.

Luke Fletcher claimed four wickets in the match, including early breakthroughs in each innings, whilst Paul Franks collected figures of three for 16 on the final day, to give him five wickets in the contest:

Franks: “I never had any doubts I’d be able to perform.

“This was a good team performance all-round and we’ve all bowled well as a team and if we’re to be successful it’s important we carry on doing that in the future.” Luke Fletcher

“I’ve always backed myself and trusted my ability – no matter what. Whether you go through good times or bad, it’s always nice to contribute to a winning performance and that was an excellent winning performance.

“I’d like to give credit to the rest of the seam bowling attack. Throughout the whole they game they worked as an excellent unit. I think Samit backed it up well in the first innings. Luke has led the attack well all season and I think we’re working well as a group.

“We’ve got an understanding of what we’re about - starving the run-rate on a wicket where you’ve got a little bit of bounce and a bit of carry is always going to create chances and that’s what we did.

So did Franks, nicknamed The General, believe in his heart of hearts, that Notts would be triumphant on the final day?

“I was a little bit nervous over my cornflakes this morning because they’d got some depth in batting and I’d have liked a few more on the board.

“They’d bowled very well at us, as well, throughout the match. It was tale of two very good bowling attacks but I’m pleased that we managed to come out on top.”

Luke Fletcher enjoyed a fine all-round game, making a vital contribution with the bat after coming in as nightwatchman at the end of the second day.

This was his assessment of the contest:

“It’s always nice to be on the good side of a result at Trent Bridge after the disappointments against Middlesex and Durham and we’ve managed to pull this one round against a strong Surrey side.

“I always thought if we stuck to the basics and did what we’d done the previous night with the ball and kept being consistent in the areas we bowled I thought we’d pick up the wickets but there were a lot of emotions running out there and if they’d put on a decent partnership then they’d have been on the front foot.

“We chipped away well and Franksie bowled tremendously well from the Radcliffe Road End and put all the momentum back our way and he was backed up really well by Harry Gurney.

“This was a good team performance all-round and we’ve all bowled well as a team and if we’re to be successful it’s important we carry on doing that in the future.”
