Chris Read’s absence from the starting eleven in the current match against Surrey brings an end to a run of 98 consecutive county championship matches for the Nottinghamshire captain.
Read was ruled out of the match with a neck injury giving James Taylor a first opportunity to captain the county.

He was last missing in September 2006, when on England duty, and didn’t miss a championship game in any season between 2007 and 2012.

The current match would have been his 99th – or even his one hundredth if the match against Durham, at Chester-le-Street, in August 2008, hadn’t been abandoned without a ball being bowled. As the toss wasn’t made and teams not officially declared, it cannot count as an appearance.

Since September 2006 Read has played in 105 of Nottinghamshire’s 107 scheduled first class fixtures, missing only the game at Oxford University in 2009 (Bilal Shafayat kept wicket), as well as the Durham abandonment.
