Having missed the LV= County Championship game against Middlesex this week, Steven Mullaney is perhaps a little more fired up for this week’s NatWest T20 Blast fixtures than most.

“We haven’t got an option - we need to do well in these games,” he said.

“We need it to stay in with a chance of surviving the group stage. We need to win every game to guarantee qualification.”

The adamant and unapologetic desire to win is shaping Mullaney’s approach to preparing for Thursday and Friday night’s T20 fixtures. He is, however, keen to avoid letting the sense of occasion overwhelm things.

“It’s better to look at it on a game by game basis,” he said.

“Take Leicestershire first on Thursday and get over that hurdle then arrive on Friday ready to perform at Trent Bridge.”

In terms of the competition itself, both matches have equal weighting in terms of keeping the Outlaws in with a chance of getting past the group stages but Friday’s fixture against Derbyshire is perhaps the most intense rivalry.

“It’s always a big game against Derbyshire regardless of where either side sits in the group,” he said.

“The crowd always add that extra pressure so a proper performance is needed, definitely.”

Whilst he admits the team have suffered a dip in form during this T20 campaign, Mullaney has been pleased with his own contributions so far.

“My bowling’s been good, I’ve been consistent so I’m happy with that,” he said.

“In terms of my batting, I feel like I’m getting to where I want to be and can help us win games at the end.”

While he’s content to take it one game at a time, Mullaney admits to holding a personal target of two from two this week and goes into the fire of the next few days ready to bring fresh energy to the team and revive the Outlaws’ T20 ambitions.
