Mick Newell hopes Michael Lumb's season is about to turn after he made a valuable contribution to the draw with Yorkshire.

Number three batsman Lumb made 45 and 49 – his highest scores of the campaign – as Notts left Headingley with nine points having batted out most of the final day.

"Hopefully this is the start of better things for him." Mick Newell

"There were some pleasing signs for Lumby," said Newell.

"It's been hard work for him but he's batted well in both innings. Hopefully this is the start of better things for him."

There were other key contributions as Notts were able to declare on 335 for eight with James Taylor making 96, Chris Read 75 and Peter Siddle 48 not out.

Yorkshire were 53 for three when the teams shook hands. Newell feels Taylor deserved a century to round off what was a good week for his team.

"Taylor batted very well. He was unfortunate not to get three figures," he said. "He's still looking for that first century of the season and I'm sure that will be his next target.

"We've had a pretty good four days considering we were light in the first innings having only made 205. We got ourselves out of a couple of holes and had the best of the last two days.

"You know that if you mess up the first innings then you blow your best chance of bonus points.

"Nine points was certainly a lot more than we might have got at one stage so we've got to be happy with that.

"I don't think we could have declared too much earlier, maybe two or three overs. We'd put a lot of hard work in to get that position and we weren't of a mind to dangle a carrot in front of them where they could win."

In-form all-rounder Samit Patel did well with the ball but picked up a pair with the bat. Newell does not believe it is related to him being overlooked by England of late though.

"I don't think that is a factor," he said.

"Samit played a couple of loose shots and he got a pair here the last time we played them so maybe it's just an unlucky ground. I'm not reading too much into it."
