The fast bowling fireworks of Mark Wood ensured that England wasted little time in wrapping up the Ashes at Trent Bridge for the first time.

The Durham paceman combined searing pace with late swing to terrific effect, dismembering the stumps of both Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon to secure the return of the urn.

Ben Stokes had earlier set England on their way by nicking-off Mitchell Starc - the Durham all-rounder finishing with career-best figures of 6-36.

England entered the arena, at a packed out Trent Bridge, with Jerusalem running in their ears, needing three wickets to secure the Ashes.

The breakthrough arrived with the 22nd delivery of the morning when Stokes, with the wind inches sails having recorded a five wicket haul yesterday, dismissed Mitchell Starc for a duck, caught at third slip by Ian Bell.

Three overs later Mark Wood cleaned up the stumps of Josh Hazlewood with a lethal swinging yorker, also for zero, to put the home nation one pole away from glory.

And although Adam Voges earned a deserved standing ovation at his former home ground having reached 50 in 111 balls with seven fours, Wood demolished the stumps of Nathan Lyon for four to secure the Ashes and cue scenes of wild celebration.
