Samit Patel helped spin Nottinghamshire to success on the final day of their LV= County Championship match against Warwickshire at Trent Bridge.

Patel returned figures of four for 23 as the visitors were bowled out for 217 in their second innings, giving the home side victory by an innings and 123 runs.

In gloomy conditions, with the floodlights burning brightly, Patel and Steven Mullaney took the last six wickets to fall, clinching a win which lifts Notts up to third in the First Division table.

Nottinghamshire secured four of the wickets they needed during the first session, after the visitors began the day on 42 without loss.

William Porterfield was on 23 overnight and he batted resolutely throughout the morning to reach the interval on 48 not out, his highest Championship score of the season.

Porterfield lost his opening partner, Ian Westwood, for 19 during the early exchanges as Jake Ball found the outside edge and Chris Read did the rest.

The same combination then accounted for Laurie Evans, who made 12, although the catch was taken down the leg side after a hefty deflection.

Jonathan Trott fell lbw for the second time in the match, for 22, with Brett Hutton then striking for the second time as Sam Hain chipped into the waiting hands of Luke Wood at short midwicket.

The batsman stood his ground, uncertain that the ball had carried to the diving Wood but was sent on his way after a brief discussion between the umpires.

A clip to the fine leg fence took Porterfield to his 50, getting there in just over three hours and having faced 125 balls, with seven fours.

Midway through the afternoon Nottinghamshire hopes were reinvigorated during a penetrative spell from Samit Patel. He ended a partnership of 31 by trapping Tim Ambrose lbw for 11 then made the decisive breakthrough, bowling Porterfield for 61.

The Bears’ captain had batted for more than four hours but couldn’t prevent a delivery squeezing under the bat and spinning back onto the stumps.

Rikki Clarke and Keith Barker prevented any further damage being inflicted as they remained together in the 12 overs before tea.

In gloomy conditions, with the floodlights burning brightly, Steven Mullaney was brought into the attack and removed Keith Barker, caught at short leg by Riki Wessels, for 8.

Mullaney, who took two for 35, had Jeetan Patel caught at point by James Taylor for 28 and then Patel finished the contest emphatically, trapping Chris Wright lbw before having Boyd Rankin taken at short leg.

Notts take 24 points from the contest and leapfrog Warwickshire, who gained just four, into third spot.
