Mitchell Starc, the Australia fast bowler who bagged a six wicket haul at Trent Bridge today, says his side must keep fighting on Day Three even though England hold all the aces.

The former Yorkshire left-armer took six for 111 as England declared their first innings on 391-9, securing a first innings lead of 331.

And although he is batting at number nine in the order, the 25-year-old has a big job to do with the bat if Australia are to stay afloat in the series.

The tourists are trailing by 90 with just three second wickets in tact, but Starc insists that surrender is not the Australian way.

“We will come out tomorrow morning and fight as hard as we can,” he said. “It is the Australian way to fight until the end and that is what we will do.

“I can’t complain with my six wickets, it’s a personal achievement, but as I said before it would have been nice to head into day three in a better position. I guess six wickets in an Ashes Test is a good achievement.

“It is going to be an interesting day tomorrow, Voges is playing really well at the moment, so I am going to be out there tomorrow supporting him and batting for as long as I can.

“Hopefully it will be something similar to Birmingham and I guess a couple of guys in the shed have some runs under their belt in their careers as well, so we will be fighting as hard as we can. It is not over yet.”

Starc lavished high praise on opposition pace bowler Stuart Broad for his eight wicket burst on the opening morning, and admitted that Australia have failed to hit their straps, not just at Trent Bridge but throughout the series.

“Stuart was on the money in the first hour yesterday and it’s tough to come back when you’ve been bowled out for 60.

“With bat and ball, apart from the Lord’s Test, we haven’t executed as well as we would have wanted to. We definitely haven’t played our best cricket all series.

“I can’t remember the last five day Test we had, it was probably January against India. It has been an interesting series and it seems to be continuing that way.

“But we will fight to the end of this Test, then we have another one at the Oval."
