A century from Samit Patel was the highlight of the second day of Nottinghamshire’s match against the Combined Campuses and Colleges at North Stars CC.

Patel retired his innings closed for 105, after depositing the spin of Linton Buchanan (3-59) over long off and into the nearby field. The mighty blow was Patel’s fifth maximum in his innings of 149 balls, which also included 10 fours.

Batting for the first 60 overs of the day, the county closed on 297 for seven, with Riki Wessels also impressing with a 47-ball 50 (9x4).

After tea the students responded with 137 for four, with Jake Ball, Luke Wood, Sam Wood and Daniel Freeman each getting a wicket.

Despite the absence of Fidel Edwards, who took eight wickets on the first day, Notts lost early wickets when they batted for a second time at the start of the day.

Steven Mullaney hit Jermaine Levy’s (3-61) initial delivery, a no ball, for four and was then caught at slip from the first legitimate ball.

Greg Smith (8) fell to the same bowler before Patel and Wessels shared a stand of 88.

Wessels hit to point straight after completing his half century but, either side of lunch, Patel cut and drove the quicker bowlers with ease, before launching a ferocious assault on the spinners.

Chris Read made 21 before Brett Hutton (33 not out) and Luke Wood (39 not out) punished a tiring attack. Wood scored his runs off 15 balls with five fours and two sixes.

Combined Campuses and Colleges batted positively in the final session of the match, with Shayne Moseley (53) and Craig St Hill (43) putting on 68 for the first wicket.

Read took three catches in the innings with the other dismissal down to a beautifully judged boundary catch by Matthew Carter.
