Ireland's hopes of ICC Cricket World Cup Quarter-Final qualification rest on their final group match versus Pakistan on Sunday, following an eight-wicket defeat against India today.

The Irish made 259 all out batting first in Hamilton before Shikhar Dhawan's 85 ball 100 propelled the holders towards victory, which they completed with 13 overs to spare.

Dhawan was twice dropped in single figures and went on to score 11 fours and five sixes en route to his eighth career ODI hundred.

Rohit Sharma made 64 in an opening stand of 174 with the centurion before Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane saw their side safely to a ninth successive victory in World Cup cricket.

Kohli and Rahane's unbeaten knocks of 44 and 33 respectively ensured no late wobbles for MS Dhoni's men after a mid-innings double strike from Jordan Thompson turned 174-0 into 190-2 in the 28th over.

Leicestershire's Niall O'Brien had earlier top-scored for Ireland with 75 after openers William Porterfield and Paul Stirling laid the foundations with an opening stand of 89 in 15 overs.

Captain Porterfield's 67 came from 93 balls and was his 11th ODI fifty. Stirling hit four fours before his 41 ball 42 came to an end caught at long-off off Ravichandran Ashwin.

Suresh Raina bowled Ed Joyce for two and Porterfield, having survived a stumping chance and scored his first half-century of the tournament, chipped Mohit Sharma to mid-off.

Andy Balbirnie contributed a run-a-ball 24 in tandem with O'Brien before top-edging an attempted sweep off Ashwin to Mohammed Shami, leaving Ireland 206 for four with 11 overs remaining.

But the next five wickets fell for 32 runs, including the dismissal of O'Brien, caught behind off Shami, having struck seven fours and three sixes in his run-a-ball innings.

John Mooney and Alex Cusack added 21 for the final wicket, but a victory target of 260 was well within reach for the holders.
