Nottinghamshire’s bowlers enjoyed the last day of tour action by taking nine Hampshire wickets in the two day day friendly at Isolation Cavaliers CC.

After Notts had made 287 for six on the opening day, Hampshire responded with 309 for nine, although they only used seven batsmen, sending four of them in twice.

Twelve different bowlers were used throughout the day, with Jake Ball (pictured) and 18-year old Matthew Carter returning the best figures.

Carter, the off-spinning younger brother of pace-man Andy, took the wicket of James Vince in the over before lunch and snared two more victims straight afterwards to finish with 3-30.

Ball had earlier bowled Jimmy Adams in the third over of the day with a delivery that swung back and hit the unprotected leg stump, with the Hampshire captain not offering a shot.

The 24-year-old's opening burst was punctuated by successive deliveries that sailed down the leg side, firstly for four byes and then for five wides.

However, he adjusted to kiss the outside edge of Liam Dawson’s bat on its way to Steven Mullaney at third slip. The Mansfield born bowler finished with figures of 2-20.

Will Smith chopped Harry Gurney onto his stumps to leave the south coast side 39-3.

A stand of 63 between Vince and Adam Wheater included some hairy moments for the batsmen. Will Gidman’s first delivery cost seven runs as four overthrows came from a shy at the stumps as they attempted a chancy third.

The next ball found Adam Wheater stranded in the middle of the wicket after backing up too far, but Luke Wood’s throw from cover narrowly missed.

Vince, whose unbeaten 93 knocked the Outlaws out of last season’s NatWest T20 Blast, had looked untroubled on his way to 30 before losing his off stump after playing all-around the younger Carter.

The teenager then had Wheater miscuing to Adam Tillcock at mid off for 36 and Tom Alsop lbw padding up for nought.

Sean Ervine backed away from Luke Wood and chopped onto to the stumps for 36. And with their top seven dismissed inside 47 overs, Hampshire decided to send some of their batsmen in again.

Smith was lbw to Samit Patel for 13 missing his sweep, but Adams made a battling half century second time around, reaching his fifty in 114 balls with six fours.

Dawson’s second knock was ended by the second new ball, with Gidman knocking the off stump flat.

Adams was in a race against time to reach three figures, but found himself marooned at the non-strikers end on 97 as Dan Freeman sent down a probing maiden to Alsop at the other.

Notts return to action in the UK with a home two-day friendly against Northamptonshire, at Trent Bridge on Monday 30 and Tuesday 31 March.
