South Africa coach Russel Domingo hopes the law of averages will help his side to ICC Cricket World Cup victory over Sri Lanka.

Domingo believes Kumar Sangakkara is due a failure following four successive hundreds and insists his side have plans up their sleeve to combat the 38-year-old.

"He's in the form of his life," Domingo said. "You've got to think his low score is just round the corner I suppose.

"But we have worked on some plans that we feel we need to execute well against him."

Proteas batsman Quinton De Kock, on the other hand, has a highest score of 26 in the tournament, but Domingo is confident a return to form is imminent.

"I am not a sports psychologist but I don't know how a player can be perceived to be mentally shot. It's a little bit nasty.

"It's going to be a tough selection. On the one hand we know Quinton has got the ability to win games. But it's often difficult to have all six batters in form at the same time.

"We just sort of have this gut feeling that Quinton has got a big score around the corner. He's done well against Sri Lanka. I'm sure he'll have a good feeling playing against Sri Lanka."

The tournament's first quarter-final will take place at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Wednesday with a 3.30am start UK time.

While South Africa are hoping for their first ever knockout victory in World Cup cricket, Sri Lanka have a proud record of tournament success having followed winning the 1996 competition with appearances in the final in 2007 and 2011.

Left-arm spinner Rangana Herath could miss the game for Sri Lanka with a finger injury. Captain Angelo Matthews has given the 36-year-old only a 50 per cent chance of making it for the match having not yet tested the injury with a bowl in the nets.

"He's still fifty-fifty. He hasn't had a bowl yet. The physio has to have a look at him once again.

"If he bowls at practice he'll be in contention for selection. If not, he won't be playing."
