After Notts Outlaws won the Barbados T20 Cup for the third year in a row, it was Riki Wessels that stepped up for the prize.

Wessels was made captain by Mick Newell for the tournament and the 29-year-old said winning the tournament meant a lot to his side.

“It’s always nice to win here in Barbados and we’ve done it for three years in a row now, so this tournament really does mean a lot to us.

“I wouldn’t say no if I was asked to do it (the captaincy) again because it’s a nice thing to do and it was such a privilege to captain such a prestigious club.”

Wessels saw his side over the winning line himself by hitting the winning six in a knock of 59 not out in the final against Northamptonshire.

“It was nice to spend a bit of time in the middle with Sam Wood and not to lose any more wickets," he said. "If new batsmen had come in on a tricky surface, chasing would have been quite hard.

“We stuck to our plans, the bowlers bowled really well up front in all three games. They took wickets for us which is what you need to do in the first six overs.

“We did that consistently and set the tempo for the rest of the innings for Mull (Steven Mullaney) and Samit (Patel) to do their thing, which they’ve done for the last five or six years.

“Hopefully this will set us up now for the rest of the tour and for the white ball season back home.”

The final match of the tour, a two-day fixture against Hampshire on Wednesday and Thursday, is now being played at Isolation Cavaliers Cricket Club at Lakes in St Andrew parish on the eastern side of the island.
