Nottinghamshire’s Director of cricket Mick Newell is thrilled that Peter Moores has begun his tenure as Head Coach at Trent Bridge with a first Lord’s one-day trophy success.
The former England coach has won the County Championship title while in charge at Sussex and Lancashire.
But Moores had never come out on top in a live showpiece final until Saturday’s memorable win for Notts Outlaws against Surrey in the Royal London One-Day Cup, having lost as a Sussex player against Warwickshire in 1993.
Long-serving Newell – who relinquished direct responsibility for first-team affairs to take a more holistic role ahead of the 2017 season – says successor Moores deserves all the congratulations coming his way.
“It’s fantastic for Peter to get a trophy win here, especially so early in the season,” said Newell. “It’s particularly sweet for him from a personal point of view as I know he’s not won a major domestic one-day trophy before.
“The team has played some wonderful cricket in the 50-over competition under his leadership, and it’s much better to get over the line in a final like that, rather than be on the wrong end of it.
“I’m more confident of winning and less nervous than when I was right in the mix.”

“It’s lovely for not just him but the other coaching staff as well, some of which are new in their roles this season such as the Assistant Head Coach (Paul Franks) and the physio (James Pipe).”
Newell admitted it was a far more pleasant experience watching at Lord’s having taken a step back from the front line.
He said: “It was certainly different and a little bit more relaxed from in hospitality with a shirt and tie on, rather than being in the dressing room.
“I’m more confident of winning and less nervous than when I was right in the mix. You enjoy watching the game more and appreciate it when you’re not living every ball.”
The Outlaws now turn their attentions to the shortest format of the game, with the NatWest T20 Blast beginning on Friday (7 July) at the Yorkshire Vikings and the first home game following against neighbours Derbyshire Falcons on Friday 21 July.
Newell is confident the players will quickly re-focus after Saturday’s huge high as Australian Dan Christian takes over the captaincy for the tournament.
“When you put a trophy in the cabinet at this point in the season, it gives you a lot of confidence,” he said. “It’s probably a good time to have a new captain coming in when we are starting a new tournament.
“The players will want to do well as we have two games this weekend before break for the Trent Bridge Test match when other teams will be playing. They’ll want to put themselves in a good position by the time they start the home games.”
