Billy Root rounded off the Nottinghamshire Second XI season with an unbeaten century on the final day of their friendly with Derbyshire at Queen’s Park, Chesterfield, which ended in a draw.

With two of the three previous days having been totally washed out, the visitors resumed their first innings on 161-1, with Lyndon James 81 not out and Root 63 not out.

And while James fell just short of three figures, Root moved along to 145 not out from 174 balls with 24 fours as Notts declared at lunchtime on 303-5.

James’ dismissal, however, did not come until after the 150 partnership was posted from 154 balls before he was bowled by David Jacobs for 93.

Tom Moores joined Root, who brought up the 200 and then his century in quick succession with boundaries.

Moores was bowled for 25 by Tom Brett, making it 250-3, and Luke Wood came and went for 3 as he was caught at deep mid-wicket by Matthew Sonczak.

Connor Marshall also fell victim to Sonczak, who trapped him lbw for 6, but Matt Carter, who made 12 not out, and Root then took Notts through to their declaration.

After both sides forfeited an innings, Derbyshire were left requiring 304 to win from the 63 overs.

The hosts opened their reply with James Kettleborough and Ben Wright, who was caught by Moores off the bowling of Wood for 4 in the fifth over.

The same combination brought about the dismissal of Archie Gleadhall for 5 before Jack Blatherwick knocked back Kettleborough’s off stump for 18.

It was 68-4 when Josh Morgan chased a Matt Carter ball down the leg side and was caught by keeper Moores to go for 7.

But there was no collapse as Derbyshire dug in to reach 119-4 at the captain’s handshake, with Tom Wood on 50 not out and Nils Priestley on 17 not out as part of an unbroken stand of 51.
