Nottinghamshire Head Coach Peter Moores is not ruling out a further new signing before the start of the season, but says it is unlikely at this stage.

The Club have recently added to their batting firepower with the addition of New Zealander Ross Taylor as an overseas player for the first half of the 2018 summer.

But after several retirements and departures during or at the end of the 2017 campaign – most notably Chris Read, Michael Lumb and Brendan Taylor – there is still room for another addition, but only if it is of the requisite quality.

“As it stands, Ross Taylor will be the last addition before the start of the season, but it doesn’t mean we aren’t still in the market for the right players,” said Moores.

“We keep our eyes and ears open as we always do and work with the players we’ve got to keep us moving forward.”

“As we all know, we lost quite a few players during the course of last season, so if the right player comes along, we are certainly in a position to sign somebody, but at the moment, that player hasn’t surfaced.

“Of course, that’s not say that we’re not happy with our own and what we’ve got, but it’s just more about having depth in the squad.

“We keep our eyes and ears open as we always do and work with the players we’ve got to keep us moving forward.”

Moores has listened with interest to returning Club Captain Steven Mullaney talk about his experiences leading the North to a 2-1 victory in the recent North-South series in Barbados.

The all-rounder did not get much chance to demonstrate his skills with the ball but did record scores of 57, 42, and 52 with the bat to help his side overturn a 1-0 deficit – and avenge last year’s 3-0 defeat in the corresponding series.

Such impressive form means Moores believes Mullaney should be in the thoughts of the selectors should an opportunity become available in England’s one-day set-up.

Moores added: “If he keeps playing well then he has a chance. He’s a bit older than some of the other players (who might be in contention), but he’s not too old, that’s for sure.

“His record in 50-over cricket over the last two to three years is very strong and I think he surprised a few people with the way he played in the North-South series.

“Steven Mullaney’s record in 50-over cricket over the last two to three years is very strong.”

“He’s a situation player and has the ability to read the game. He’s shown with his batting, such as in the Essex game last year (in scoring a hundred) he has an ability to attack the boundary while also rotating the strike which you need in the middle order positions.

“He also showed that he has the mettle to go and be not out at the end and see the game home for us.

“With the ball, he’s been able not only to get important wickets but slow scoring rates at vital times too.

“He’s put himself on the radar, which is a good thing and now it’s time to come back and get stuck into what is a real challenge of being the new Club Captain at Notts.”
