Luke Wood has targeted a regular place in one of the Nottinghamshire sides as one of his prime targets for the 2018 season.

The left-arm seamer and useful left-handed lower order batsman played in Notts’ final two County Championship games of the 2017 season and took 18 wickets at 28.44 in all.

He also played six times in the T20 Blast and once in the Royal London One-Day Cup, but hopes to make a more consistent impact at first-team level this year.

“I want to get to the point where I am performing well in all three formats.”

“Last year was a confidence booster for me. I had a good season a couple of seasons ago and then I had an injury that knocked my confidence a bit,” said Wood.

“But I started to get back to that level towards the end of last season and now and I want to get to the point where I am performing well in all three formats.

“It would be nice to become a regular in the side in at least one of the three. Hopefully that will be in all three, but I don’t want to get ahead of myself.

“I think red ball has always been my strongest format, and is where I would like to get a place most of all, but I’ve also put in a lot of work with the white ball and I’m happy when I’m playing any first-team cricket.”

England player Jake Ball looks set to be available to Notts at the start of the season – and Stuart Broad is also set to dip in and out when his international commitments allow.

That duo will bolster an already strong attack featuring the likes of Harry Gurney, Mark Footitt, Luke Fletcher, Steven Mullaney and Paul Coughlin, meaning Wood knows competition will be fierce.

He added: “The calibre of bowlers at Notts in the seam department is very high, especially when you think we have Bally and Broady coming back at times and Coggers (Coughlin) having come in to replace Brett Hutton.

“Whoever features in that first Championship game we know is going to be able to hold their own.

“We have three left-arm seamers, but I think each of us offers something different.”

“We have three left-arm seamers, but I think each of us offers something different. Harry likes to go around the wicket to the right-handers and angle the ball away, I like to swing it back in to them and Footy has got a bit more pace about him that can really test the batsmen.

“I didn’t think you are ever guaranteed a spot and it almost never works out as you might think come the start of the season.

“My aim is to hopefully have a good tour in South Africa and a good pre-season so I can push for a spot.”
