Surrey moved into a healthy position on day two of their County Championship game with Nottinghamshire, despite Ravichandran Ashwin completing a ten-wicket haul in the match for the hosts at Trent Bridge.

Ashwin removed Dean Elgar, Scott Borthwick, William Jacks and Rikki Clarke, but a half-century from Jamie Smith and Jamie Clark's unbeaten 43 took Surrey to 184-7 at stumps - a lead of 308 runs.

Earlier, Notts had been dismissed for 116, Amar Virdi taking 8-61.
