Nottinghamshire’s Stuart Broad has been named England’s vice-captain for the two match Test series against New Zealand.

Broad takes the place of Ben Stokes as Joe Root’s deputy with the all-rounder missing the series having picked up an injury in the Indian Premier League.

The Notts man captained England in 27 T20Is and three ODIs between 2011 and 2014 but will assume a leadership role in the Test side for the first time at Lord’s.

The fast bowler has 146 caps for England, and is the second top wicket-taker for his country with 517. 66 of those dismissals have previously come against New Zealand, including four five-wicket hauls.

He is joined on England duty by Nottinghamshire opener Haseeb Hameed who was called up to the international squad as top order cover.
