Nottinghamshire face a tough final day needing 359 more runs to win with eight wickets in hand after the bowlers dominated day three of the Second XI Championship match against Yorkshire.

The home side batted until after tea having resumed on 27 for two at the start of the play, and added 174 for their final eight wickets, before dismissing both Notts openers before the close.

Yorkshire’s George Hill and Matt Revis resumed with their side 208 runs ahead, and added 25 more before the latter wafted at a wide Joey Evison delivery which was caught comfortably by Ben Compton at second slip.

It sparked the loss of regular wickets at the cost of cameo partnerships.

Tom Loten was the next to go four overs later when he thick edged Evison to Matthew Montgomery at gully, the pair having added ten, before Matt Waite languidly chopped Brett Hutton onto his own stumps.

Ben Birkhead then contributed five to the score before he suffered a lapse in judgement when he left alone a Hutton delivery which clattered into off-stump, and Will Luxton was sent back to the pavilion soon after by Tom Barber who found the right-hander’s edge, the catch taken at first slip by Matt Carter.

The four wickets for 58 runs came at an opportune moment for the Green and Golds but the White Roses were in a commanding position and were set to inflict more damage.

Mat Pillans added 26 with Hill, eight of which were from his bat, before Hutton took his third of the innings, Compton stretching to take a good catch to his right at second slip.

It brought James Sullivan to the crease who partnered Hill reliably. The top order batsmen brought up his half-century turning Carter around the corner for two, before rain and tea forced the players off for two hours with the score 135 for eight.

On resumption, the Sullivan and Hill added another 47 before Hill  guided a Carter delivery to Compton at first slip off the face of the bat for 77, and the innings was wrapped up for the addition of 19, James Mukherjee the last man to go courtesy of Calvin Harrison, Compton taking his fourth catch of the match at mid-wicket off a leading edge.

With a tricky 13 overs to bat before the close of play, Compton lost his wicket in the third, caught by Birkhead behind the stumps pushing at a Waite delivery, and Montgomery fell five overs later, Birkhead taking his second catch after Pillans got one to rise sharply.

Evison and nightwatchman Toby Pettman guided Notts through the final 6.3 overs before time was called, Notts finishing 24 for two, with one full day of play left to go.
