Jake Ball immediately found his rhythm on his return from injury as Nottinghamshire's Second XI Championship campaign headed to Taunton.

The 31-year-old, returning following a back injury, returned figures of 2-14 from his eight overs, dismissing Will Smeed and Lewis Goldsworthy.

Andrew Neal, Calvin Harrison and Toby Pettman all snared two victims of their own as Somerset reached 326-8 at the close, Roelof van der Merwe scoring 115.

Winning the toss and bowling first, the Green and Golds had an immediate breakthrough from the left-arm pace of Neal, Dylan Church (0) and Ben Green (2) both falling cheaply.

Goldsworthy (27) steadied the ship with George Bartlett (24) before both fell in quick succession, the first to the returning Ball and the second at the hands of Pettman.

After the interval, Ball produced arguably the ball of the day, extracting enough away movement to beat the defences of Smeed and knock back the off stump.

That brought together van der Merwe and Kasey Aldridge, and with it, Somerset’s most prosperous time of the day.

From 101-5, the middle order pair added 160 for the sixth wicket before Aldridge was LBW to Calvin Harrison for 80.

The leg-spinner had his second in his next over, Ned Leonard bowled without scoring, as the momentum switch back towards the visitors.

Any hope of a swift conclusion to the Somerset innings was thwarted by the flashing blad of van der Merwe, who brought up his century from 153 balls.

The experienced all-rounder wouldn’t see out the remainder of the final session however, Pettman’s late day surge seeing him caught behind by Dane Schadendorf.
