Sol Budinger blazed 95 from 89 balls as Nottinghamshire built a considerable platform on the first day of a friendly against Loughborough UCCE, despite rain permitting only 29.4 overs of play at the Brockington Ground.

Captaining Notts against his own university side, Matthew Montgomery won the toss and elected to bat, and it was he and Budinger who made strides in the 18.1 overs possible before lunch, bringing up the 50 run partnership in just 12.4 overs.

After the break, Budinger continued to press on, passing his fifty from 60 balls, 40 of which were dealt in boundaries.

The pair brought up their 100-run opening stand after 22.5 overs, before Montgomery reached his own half-century off a watchful 87 deliveries.

As the inclement weather closed in, Budinger was caught behind by Harry Gouldstone off the bowling of Will Rogers five shy of his century with Notts on 148, the players were then hauled from the field for the remainder of the day’s play.
