Nottinghamshire stalwart Samit Patel has extended his contract at Trent Bridge until the end of the 2023 season.

The homegrown all-rounder made his debut in 2002 at the age of 16 and has gone on to make 603 all-format appearances for the Green and Golds, scoring 20,631 runs and taking 686 wickets.

The 37-year-old continues to be contracted to the Outlaws for white-ball cricket having brought down the curtain on his red-ball career at the conclusion of the 2020 season.

He has featured for the Outlaws every year since the establihsment of the domestic T20 competition in England and Wales, which will commence its 20th edition in May this year.

“This has been my club since day dot, so I am thrilled to bits to sign this extension and to be here for two more campaigns,” said Patel.

“I still feel at the top of my game, and I believe I still have a lot to offer, which my performances last season hopefully showed.

“Myself, Dan Christian and Alex Hales will come fresh into the squad ready for when the Blast begins, which will hopefully add some impetus and white-ball specialism to the group following the block of red-ball cricket at the start of the season.

“Since stepping back from the First-Class game, I’ve been able to tailor my training and preparation to limited-overs cricket, and that has benefitted my performances.

“We have an exceptionally talented squad and have been a force to be reckoned with for some time in T20 cricket. I can only see that extending into the future.

“The goal is obviously to win trophies and, having been a player here for so long, I’ve experienced a huge amount of support from our members and supporters and I know how much they crave success too.

“I am really excited to have at least two more years of playing in front of packed houses at Trent Bridge and striving to deliver some more glory.”

In the 2021 edition of the Vitality Blast, Patel took 16 wickets whilst boasting an economy rate of just 6.63. With the bat, he scored 309 runs, averaging 30.90.

His successful tournament preceded spells in the Abu Dhabi T10, the Lanka Premier League, the Pakistan Super League as well as the inaugural edition of The Hundred.

He had previously also appeared in Australia’s Big Bash and the respective Premier Leagues in Bangladesh and the Caribbean, amassing a worldwide total of 352 career appearances in the format.

“We know all about the class and quality Samit brings to our T20 side. He’s been a match-winner for us on so many occasions in the past,” said Nottinghamshire Head Coach Peter Moores.

“He’s become hugely dependable with the ball and has the ability to bowl match-defining overs at different stages of the innings.

“With the bat, we’ve seen games won from so many different and challenging situations when Samit is at the crease.

“He’s certainly a firm favourite among our members and supporters and with good reason because he has consistently delivered for the club on the field over two decades, and that’s the kind of contribution to which his teammates can aspire.

“He has a knack for turning it on in the most important matches and on the big stage too.

“The opportunity to play around the world in recent years has seen Samit further develop his craft, and he’s someone who shares his experiences in a really positive way with the players around him as well.

“We know how determined he is to achieve more success with Notts over the course of the next couple of years, and he knows he’s within a group that completely shares that ambition.”
