Liam Patterson-White picked up his second five-wicket haul in the space of three matches as Nottinghamshire enjoyed a productive first day of their LV= County Championship clash with Durham at Riverside.

Having won the toss and opted to bowl first, Notts took two wickets before lunch as Luke Fletcher took his 600th scalp in all formats with the final ball of the morning.

Durham amassed 96 runs by the interval, before fiery spells from overseas signings James Pattinson and Dane Paterson reduced the hosts to 135/5. However, Patterson-White stole the limelight by taking all of the final three wickets.

That left Durham with a first innings total of 230, which the Green and Golds made inroads into in the 15 evening session overs they batted through, closing on 50 without loss.

Earlier, there was a distinct chill in the air even as the sun illuminated the ground from above Lumley Castle, and with a green covering on the pitch, Steven Mullaney elected to insert the hosts.

Initially, there was little joy for the Notts seamers, who found a little movement but were unsuccessful in their hunt for wickets as Michael Jones and Sean Dickson put up an unbroken half-century stand.

It was to be Paterson who did find that breakthrough, as he enticed Jones into a mis-timed pull shot which saw the batter only able to feather a bottom edge through to Tom Moores for 22.

Now partnered by Keegan Petersen, Dickson advanced to a 90-ball half-century shortly afterwards, but would make only minimal further progress as Fletcher pinned him in front for 54 to snare his milestone scalp.

Patterson-White picked up his first wicket shortly after the restart as he pinned South African batter Petersen in front for five, before repeating the trick just minutes later as home captain Scott Borthwick nicked through to his counterpart Steven Mullaney in the slips.

Durham’s position then became ever more precarious as Paterson struck again to remove star batter David Bedingham, grazing the outside edge of his bat on the way through to Moores behind the stumps.

Ned Eckersley and Liam Trevaskis steadied the ship with a stand of 32, but the latter was forced from the field under concussion protocols when on 15 after twice being struck on the helmet by Pattinson.

The Australian quick then removed Eckersley just before tea with a memorable delivery that uprooted the off stump to leave Durham 187/6 at the second break, and Patterson-White wasted little time after that.

After Paterson had seen Matty Potts hole out to Lyndon James at deep backward square leg, the spinner then pinned Trevaskis’s concussion replacement George Drissell in front to pick up his third wicket.

The dismissals of Oliver Gibson and Raine, the latter of whom was Durham’s second-highest run-scorer with 36, brought the innings to a close, and dealt Notts the hand of having to face the day’s remaining overs.

Haseeb Hameed and Ben Slater rose to that challenge, each ending unbeaten in the face of bowling from Raine and Chris Rushworth, and the Green and Golds ended the day with a first-innings deficit of 180.
